TIPS

On Packing

Firstly - we recommend using boxes for as much of your items as possible. IKEA style vinyl bags are also great, but boxes are king. If you try to use garbage bags for more than your pillows, your things may end up on the floor in a staircase, on the street or in the truck, because bags break. They also don’t “stack” the way boxes do, making your items inherently less safe during transport. Some things are obviously difficult to box but where possible, we highly recommend using boxes.

Box Size and Recommended Function

Small Boxes - work great for books and fragiles.

Medium/Large - small kitchen appliances / electronics / clothes/ bedding

Wardrobe - explains itself :)

Packing Fragiles

Use packing paper or cloth (feel free to get creative with socks, shirts, etc) to prevent glassware from contact with each other. You would also do well to make sure there’s a little paper or cloth “cushion” if you will at the top and bottom of these boxes. Lastly - clearly label these!

Pack Considerately

If you can’t lift a box up, it’s probably overstuffed.

Buy Mattress Bags

Some people don’t realize they care about their mattress staying clean until they see it on the floor in a stairwell as sweaty movers are trying to force it around a bend.

Buy mattress bags. The heavy duty ones too that won’t rip easy. Trust us - don’t cheap out on this.

The Dresser Is Heavy Enough

For the sake of your movers’ backs, and the structural integrity of your dresser, we ask that you do not leave clothes in it. Even if it’s a relatively light dresser. Almost, especially so. Often, in the course of the move, a dresser has to be turned in various orientations - whether it’s to go down the stairs, fit in an elevator, or get into the truck. It’s not safe for the item if it’s full of a ton of extra weight. The more things you have in carryable, stackable boxes or bins, the better.

Same goes for nightstands, TV stands, credenzas, etc.

Speaking of TIPS…How should I handle tipping?

Well firstly - while optional of course, it's quite nice if you do it. It's among the hardest of service industry jobs, and instead of say, bringing a plate of pasta and your favorite wine to you (which we'd say also deserves a percentage of the bill), they're just uh...handling ALL of your earthly possessions, and with care. So if you think of it like a restaurant bill, 15-30% is typical, though we doubt any of our workers would object if you go higher.

Will you wrap the furniture that I care about?

If we’re handling both sides of the move - Yes. We may even wrap the things you don’t care about! Why? Funny you should ask! A couple of reasons:

1) if something were to get slightly damaged because it wasn’t protected, you might discover that you care a little more than you thought.

2) things such as cabinets and dressers (with doors/drawers that are liable to fly out when carried, particularly at angles up/down stairs) and modular couches (that may come apart depending on where it’s held) become a bit of a liability unless otherwise secured. So yes - we’ll have premium padded moving blankets and/or shrink wrap on decky for that purpose.
